Speaker biography: Catherine Cross

Catherine Cross is a Chief Research Specialist with the Centre for Poverty, Employment and Growth at the HSRC in Pretoria. Catherine was born in the US and received her MA in anthropology from the University of Michigan, but has spent most of her adult life in South Africa. She has served as senior editor of three scholarly books, and has published a number of academic articles. Catherine has been leading the CPEG migration sub-programme, and serves as head of the HSRC's sector of the DST/CSIR Integrated Planning, Development and Modelling project addressing migration and settlement. Catherine has also completed work in these and related fields for South Africa's Presidency, the World Bank, USAID, GTZ, and the International Labour Organisation in Geneva. Since joining the HSRC she has worked in researching the fields of migration and population in Africa, gender studies, housing issues and services delivery, poverty dynamics, and homelessness studies.
