Speaker biography: Kathryn Ewing

Dr Kathryn Ewing is the Workstream Leader of Planning and Design: Informal Settlements at Sustainable Urban Neighbourhood Development (SUN) in Cape Town, South Africa. She has been with SUN Development since the beginning of 2010. Her responsibility falls within senior management of the Situational Crime Prevention Workstream of the Violence Prevention through Urban Upgrading model used in Khayelitsha, Cape Town, with a focus on the Informal Settlement Transformation Progamme. Kathryn is a registered professional in the three spheres of the built environment, being Architecture, Urban Design and City Planning. She has worked professionally and within academic research in these spatial fields for the past 12 years, in both Zimbabwe and South Africa. Kathryn has a PhD from the University of Glasgow, where her focus was on the spatial occupation of informal households and perceived security of urban land in Harare, Zimbabwe. She published her PhD in 2008. She has a passion for working with local communities and listening to their stories.
