Brief Description

The Urban Land Markets Programme Southern Africa, known as Urban LandMark, was set up in 2006 and received seven years of funding from UKAID and other funders. After funding patterns shifted, the programme closed in 2013.

Urban LandMark was dedicated to making urban land markets work for and with the poor. Urban LandMark defined what making markets work for the poor could mean by:

- Defining what this meant for access to urban land and developing a distinctive voice for this approach,
- Mobilising diverse players, including the private sector and civil society, to come up with innovative ways to achieve this objective,
- Promoting policy dialogue between people, and
- Bringing about change in government policy and implementation, and in private sector praxis.

Its four main areas of thematic work were land markets, land governance, land rights, and the physical and spatial form of cities and towns.
