Street traders in Tshwane: investigating their challenges and realities

Recent Urban Landmark research projects have explored the challenges faced by street traders operating in the City of Tshwane Metropolitan Municipality (CTMM).

  • A report [745KB] and presentation [1.11MB] by French anthropologist Elsa Burzynski investigate the role of street trading in the lives of migrants.

  • An article by Ms Burzynski explores the measures used to control street trading in the CTMM ahead of and during the 2010 Soccer World Cup.

  • A paper by researcher Marry Masonganye argues that informal trading poses both an opportunity and a challenge to good spatial planning and management of South African cities.
